Functional Testing as a Naturopath
In some cases, I may recommend functional testing to help uncover the why behind your symptoms. These tools can offer deeper insight into your health and are used to complement your case history, symptom picture, and personal goals, not replace them.
Functional testing allows me to personalise your treatment plan with greater clarity and avoid unnecessary guesswork.
Some of the tests I commonly use include:
-
Nutrient Panels:
-
I can refer you for blood tests through your GP or private labs to assess nutrient status (like iron, B12, selenium, and iodine). This is foundational to check for an underlying nutritional deficiency.
-
-
Hormonal Testing:
-
In certain cases, I may suggest exploring hormone levels (e.g. oestrogen, progesterone, cortisol, or androgens such as testosterone or DHEA) through blood testing to better understand symptoms like fatigue, mood changes, sleep issues, or irregular cycles.
-
-
Gut Microbiome Testing:
-
Assesses digestive function, bacterial diversity, inflammation markers, and imbalances such as overgrowths or pathogens. This can be especially useful for ongoing bloating, IBS, or skin concerns.
-
-
Vaginal Microbiome Testing:
-
Offers insight into the balance of beneficial and disruptive microbes. It can help explain symptoms like thrush, bacterial vaginosis, or irritation — particularly during hormonal transitions such as pregnancy or menopause.
-
-
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA):
-
A non-invasive test that looks at mineral balance and potential heavy metal exposure. HTMA is particularly helpful for children or for assessing long-term nutrient trends and detoxification capacity.
-
I’ll always talk through testing options during your consultation to ensure anything we choose is relevant, purposeful, and aligned with your health goals and budget.
Testing isn’t always needed — but when it is, it can provide valuable insight.

FAQs
What to expect in the initial consultation? Allow 60 minutes for the consultation. The appointment will include a thorough case history regarding the presenting health issue/s, a review of diet and lifestyle aspects, stress and environment/social contributions.
Do I need to bring anything to the appointment? If you have had any recent tests, please bring a copy of the results or email them prior to your appointment. It will save time tracking these down after the appointment. In addition, take photos of any medications or supplements you are currently taking or bring them with you. Please fill in the New Client Form, occasionally this email goes to your junk or spam folder.
Is a naturopath the same as a nutritionist? A naturopath and nutritionist view the patient in a similar way, both are holistic and multidimensional. Both modalities incorporate diet, lifestyle, and nutritional supplementation as part of the treatment recommendations. A naturopath, in addition to this, can also use herbal medicine as part of the treatment, whilst not always required it is a useful tool to have. Teaching my patients how to eat for long-term health is one of my passions. As a society, we are often ‘yo-yoing’ between different fad diets that are not sustainable.
