Winter often brings a wave of coughs, colds and sniffles through households, leaving many parents wondering how they can better support their family’s immune health.
While we can’t prevent every illness (and getting sick is a normal part of building immune resilience), there are many evidence-informed nutrition and lifestyle strategies that can help support the body’s natural defences.
As a naturopath, I often work with families who are looking for practical ways to support their health; from improving nutritional foundations and gut health to creating sustainable lifestyle habits that support wellbeing.

The foundations of a healthy immune system
1. Nourishing the body with key nutrients
The immune system relies on a range of nutrients to function effectively. A varied, nutrient-dense diet provides the building blocks needed for healthy immune responses.
Some key nutrients involved in immune health include:
Vitamin C, found in foods such as citrus fruits, berries, capsicum and broccoli
Zinc, found in foods such as seafood, meat, legumes, nuts and seeds
Vitamin D, which plays an important role in immune regulation
Protein, which provides essential amino acids for immune cells and repair processes
Rather than focusing on a single “immune boosting” food or supplement, supporting overall diet patterns is often the most valuable approach.
2. The gut-immune connection
Did you know a large proportion of your immune system is closely connected with your gut?
The gut microbiome plays an important role in immune regulation, helping to communicate with immune cells and maintain balance within the body.
Supporting a healthy microbiome can include:
Eating a wide variety of plant foods
Including fibre-rich foods regularly
Incorporating fermented foods where tolerated
Supporting digestive health
3. Sleep, stress and lifestyle factors
Nutrition is only one piece of the puzzle. Sleep, stress and daily routines all influence immune function.
For children especially, supporting healthy routines around sleep, outdoor play, movement and balanced meals can have a significant impact on overall wellbeing.
For parents, it’s also important to recognise that caring for a family can be demanding. Small, consistent habits often make the biggest difference, especially if the kids are waking you in the night. I suggest getting to bed 30 minutes earlier each night for a week, then see if you feel more rested.
